(4 Mar 2026) RESTRICTION SUMMARY: ASSOCIATED PRESS Providence, Rhode Island - 4 March 2026 1. Diocese of Providence office building located at Cathedral of Saints Peter & Paul 2. SOUNDBITE (English) Peter Neronha, Attorney General of Rhode Island: “What we found was that the diocese employed 75 credibly accused priests who reportedly abused over 300 children.” 3. Exterior of Cathedral of Saints Peter & Paul 4. SOUNDBITE (English) Peter Neronha, Attorney General of Rhode Island: ++QUALITY AS INCOMING++ “So the team really had to go through over 250,000 pages of records, get them organized, go through them, understand them, piece them together to be able to tell this very complicated 75-year story.” 5. Exterior of Cathedral of Saints Peter & Paul 6. SOUNDBITE (English) Peter Neronha, Attorney General of Rhode Island: “And historically, what we saw, particularly under Bishops Gelineau and Bishop McVinney, was that this clergy abuse was concealed. What we also saw was that the diocese failed to consistently refer to law enforcement allegations of clergy sexual abuse. And while the situation has improved considerably, we believe, as I've said earlier, that more work is necessary." 7. Powerpoint slide showing excerpts from the investigation 8. SOUNDBITE (English) Ann Webb, survivor: “As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, this report feels like vindication for me for what I've known for years and that I am constantly trying to tell the public about, but they don't always see it. I don't know how they can not see it with this AG report.” 9. Powerpoint slide showing excerpts from the investigation 10. SOUNDBITE (English) Ann Webb, survivor: “So today, this is just monumental. I don't know how else to say it, that to have the Attorney General's office and all that law enforcement behind us so strongly and essentially pointing the finger at the diocese for what they didn't do and how what they didn't do harmed children." 11. Various exteriors of Cathedral of Saints Peter & Paul 12. SOUNDBITE (English) Ann Webb, survivor: ++QUALITY AS INCOMING++ “You have no idea how important this is to me. To be deemed non-credible by the diocese for the last 32 years has haunted me in ways I cannot begin to describe. In our parish alone… the man who abused me was the pastor in our parish for many decades. But it cannot be a coincidence that six credibly accused pedophile priests served at Sacred Heart Church along with him — my own parish.” 13. Various exteriors of Cathedral of Saints Peter & Paul STORYLINE: Catholic priests in Rhode Island preyed on hundreds of children for decades, and were protected by bishops more concerned with the church’s reputation than the victims, according to a new report on clergy sexual abuse that echoes findings elsewhere. The report, released Wednesday by Attorney General Peter Neronha, follows a multiyear investigation into the Catholic Diocese of Providence, Rhode Island. Neronha said the full scope of the priest abuse problem in Rhode Island — the smallest U.S. state but the one with the highest Catholic population per capita, at nearly 40% — had long remained elusive. He agreed with victims who say not enough has been done to address the problem long after it was exposed in the nearby Boston diocese in 2002. “If you’re the Diocese of Providence and you’re listening, this is a scandal you need to own and you need to fix,” Neronha told reporters Wednesday. “We can’t slow walk solutions and we can’t slow walk justice.” AP Video shot by Rodrique Ngowi and Leah Willingham =========================================================== Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: / ap_archive Facebook: / aparchives Instagram: / apnews You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
