Nikos Skalkottas (1904 - 1949) - Five Greek Dances for Strings - iv. Arkadikos. Performed live by the Belinfante Quartet at Studio150 Bethlehemkerk, Amsterdam - October 2024 Nikos Skalkottas was one of the leading Greek composers of the 20th century. He studied with Arnold Schoenberg between 1927 - 1931 and began using the 12-tone method in his compositions but later reverted to traditional forms, successfully combining classical music with Greek folk music. Sadly, not much of his music was performed during his lifetime and virtually none of it was published. Latterly, Skalkottas led a difficult life hindered by debt and health complications and he deeply resented the struggle of getting his music performed and published. His major works include symphonic suites, three piano concerti, four string quartets, and the overture The Return of Ulysses.
