HISTORIC NEWSREEL WILEY POST & WILL ROGERS U.S. MARINES IN CHINA 51334

An early television program derived from footage gathered by the defunct General Newsreel Co., “Yesterday’s Newsreel” offers the viewer “television highlights of the news of yesteryear” by providing vintage clips of famous people and events from the first half of the 20th century. The historical episodes opens with the signing of the Versailles Peace Treaty in 1919 (mark 02:28), and scenes of delegates from the United States and Europe, including Charles Evans Hughes and British Prime Minister David Lloyd George (mark 02:15) and George, President Woodrow Wilson, French Prime Minister George Clemenceau, and Italian Prime Minister Vittorio Orlando as they enter the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles at mark 02:34. From there the film recalls the deaths of actor and humorist Will Rogers and aviator Wiley Post in a 1935 plane crash (mark 03:17) and discusses their contributions to the American way of life. By mark 05:15 there is talk of some of the “Personalities” of 1928 including John D. Rockefeller, Jr., before telling us of how “U.S. Marines Sale For War-Torn China” in 1927 and we see the leader of the Republic of China, Chiang Kai-shek (mark 06:45), reviewing Nationalist troops in a prelude to civil war in the nation. The film draws near its end with a look at 1922 fashion (mark 08:21), including a bathing suit review in Miami Beach and the latest in afternoon ensembles, and 1930 sports highlights (mark 09:55) featuring golfer Bobby Jones on the greens and distance runner Glenn Cunningham on the track.
