Five Reasons Why This Series Has Me (Us) Obsessed and Wrecked and a Few Therapist's Ideas for What to Do About It I’m Dr. Dave from The Good Life Lab — a professor, therapist, and coach turned content creator. I’m also a former college athlete and a faith-formed gay man who spent decades trying not to be gay. So when I watched this series hits me hard on a number of levels. This video is Episode 2 of a new mini-series called "From Heated Rivalries to Real Loving Relationships" — where I reflect on Heated Rivalry as a therapist who works with men like Shane and Ilya, and as someone who lived much of this story internally for years. In this episode, I explore: Why this series is hitting me/us so hard Why it’s resonating far beyond queer audiences Why straight men, queer men, athletes, and non-athletes alike are obsessed What Heated Rivalry taps into beneath the sex and steam — longing, fear, tenderness, and the need to stop fighting ourselves I talk openly about: Growing up as a closeted college athlete Internalized homophobia, shame, and fear Why this story feels validating rather than tragic The role of craft, writing, music, and timing in making this series such a cultural moment And why I think many men today — gay, straight, and everything in between — are starving for authentic connection with other men This isn’t a critique or a recap. It’s a gut-level response. It’s also an invitation. If this series stirs something in you — curiosity, longing, grief, desire, or recognition — it doesn’t mean you’re broken. It may mean something true is asking to be acknowledged. As a therapist and coach, I will also talk about how I help men process these experiences in real life in this series : through sexual history reflection, stages of coming out, dating, working through internalized homophobia, and eventually moving from rivalry to real relationships. Coming Up in This Series Episode 3: My Heated Rivalries — a compassionate look at the men I loved in secret Episode 4: Stages of Coming Out for Male Athletes (using scenes from the series) Episode 5: From rivalry to relationship — dating men after coming out Episode 6: Finding community beyond dating (with possible guests) For now, this is where we start. This is why I’m obsessed. This is why I’m wrecked. And this is why we’re going to keep talking about it. And, if you are someone who is still in the closet, please reach out to me here for a confidential 30-minute session to explore possible coming out strategies and a coaching program that has worked for me and my clients: https://www.drdavesgoodlifelab.com/bo... #HeatedRivalry #QueerAthletes #GayAthletes #ComingOutJourney #ClosetedAthlete #QueerRomance #Masculinity #InternalizedHomophobia #GayMen #MentalHealthForMen #LateBloomingGay #ChosenFamily #TherapistReacts #GoodLifeLab
