RAGA JAUNPURI : Named after the place / township of its creator, Sultan Hussain Sharki, the ruler of Jaunpur, UP in medieval India, this is an extremely popular morning raga in the Hindustani system of classical Indian music which has also been lovingly adopted by the Carnatic system of music in South India. Often referred to as “ Din ka Darbari “ it belongs to the same thaat and employs the very same notes as Darbari though in a significantly different order. It is easily the most popular representative raga of the Asavari thaat that consists of a scale with the notes g, d and n komal ( flat ). The vilambit presented here was taught to me by my first major guru, Pt BD Srivastava of Kanpur, himself a scholar student of the famous Marris College of Music, Lucknow. Therefore, I’d presume that the composition is either of one of his gurus or his own, but I’m extremely fond of it as both the melodic arrangement and the text of the composition seem to epitomise the essence of Jaunpuri for me. It is set to the rarely heard jhoomra taal of fourteen beat cycle. The following chhota khayal is also a rare composition by the celebrated Pt Jagannath bua Purohit ( Gunidas ) set to madhyalaya ektal. The following item is a devotional sadara in Bhairavi eulogising the quintessential Devi - the mother goddess of India’s timeless Sanatan dharma. Tabla sangat is by Pt Subhen Chatterjee, sarangi by Utd Mehmood Ali and violin by Dr CM Rath. Harmonium sangat was by Shri Partho Chatterjee and DrManimala Bandopadhyay.
