A rhinoplasty lasts forever – it is permanent; if it is done well. In order to achieve this result, careful planning is necessary. Factors such as the cartilage type, cartilage strength, thickness of the skin envelope, and quality of grafting cartilage are carefully evaluated preoperatively, and a surgical plan is developed based on these findings. For example, someone with very weak/soft cartilage will require thicker grafts, and possibly even a double layer graft to make sure that everything stands the test of time. These physical exam findings are again checked in the operating room when the nose is opened to see whether any changes will need to be made in the original surgical game plan.
