THE SONGBIRD: Lyric soprano Laquita Mitchell hails from New York City. She studied at Westminster Choir College and then earned a Masters degree in music at the Manhattan School of Music. She won several competitions and joined the young artists programs in San Francisco and Houston. Her operatic appearances include Donna Elvira and Alice Ford at Wolftrap, Micaela and Violetta with the New York City Opera, Musetta in Los Angeles, Mimi in Cincinnati, Donna Anna in Portland, and Mozart's Countess in Toldeo. "Porgy and Bess" has been a frequent outing for Mitchell, including the roles of Clara (Los Angeles, Washington, Paris, and Spain) and Bess (San Francisco, Atlanta, Tanglewood, Madison, Boston, Cleveland, Toledo, Baltimore, Santa Barbara, and Budapest). THE MUSIC: Handel's "Giulio Cesare in Egitto" premiered in 1724 in London. It was a success with several productions in Europe during Handel's lifetime and periodic revivals over the next 250 years until it became one of his most frequently produced and recorded operas. "Non disperar, chi sà?" is the first of Cleopatra's eight arias. She teases her obnoxious brother Ptolemy that his energy would be better spent pursuing love instead of competing with her for the crown.
