Our trip begins on the R201 line, a 100.6-kilometer route opened in 1886, connecting Zaprešić and Čakovec through the heart of the scenic Hrvatsko Zagorje and Međimurje regions. Winding through lush countryside and vibrant towns, this railway links the region with Zagreb and is a crucial part of Croatia’s rail network. The line is single-tracked and partially electrified, with connections to other regional lines like the R106 towards Slovenia and the L202 at Hum Lug. Upon reaching Čakovec, we shift to the M501 line, a fascinating segment that’s not just part of Croatian history but also a vital international route. This 42.4-kilometer track connects Croatia’s rail network to Slovenia and Hungary, passing through Kotoriba and linking with the larger Budapest-Vienna railway. Originally constructed in 1860, it was the first railway built in present-day Croatia, providing essential connections to Austria-Hungary. Over the years, the line has developed with stops in places like Donji Kraljevec and Mala Subotica, both carrying stories of Croatia’s evolving rail infrastructure. Donji Kraljevec is a birthplace of the esoteric Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner. His father was working on the newly opened railway line. Recently modernized between 2020 and 2024, the Čakovec-Kotoriba section received extensive updates, including a full railbed overhaul, new culverts, and upgraded crossings, allowing for speeds up to 100 km/h. With newly refurbished platforms and passenger facilities, this once-historic line has now been elevated to meet modern standards while maintaining its historic charm. The improvements offer smoother travel through iconic stops like Čakovec Buzovec and Donji Kraljevec.
