Domestic workers play an increasingly significant role in the U.S. economy. Yet their labor continues to be invisible and unregulated. These factors, combined, make domestic workers especially vulnerable to exploitation and abuse on the job. In this story we follow Lizeth, who’s been a domestic worker since 1994, shortly after she arrived in the U.S. from Guatemala at the age of 15. After a decade in the US, Lizeth became a member of Domestic Workers United, where she has joined forces with other members to organize for justice and fight for rights that are often taken for granted: formal contracts, non-abusive and safe working environments, and economic upward mobility. Domestic Workers United is an organization of Caribbean, Latina and African nannies, housekeepers, and elderly caregivers in New York, organizing for power, respect, fair labor standards and to help build a movement to end exploitation and oppression for all. DWU has helped domestic workers secure close to half a million dollars in wage theft over the past 20 years and has worked to establish the nations first Domestic Worker's Bill of Rights in NY State. DWU's mission and goals are to organize for power, respect, fair labor standards, and to build a movement for social change. http://www.domesticworkersunited.org/...
