Video shows our visit to Hartsholme Country Park within walking distance of Lincoln city centre. There is a regular bus service from the City Bus Station. Car parking is free and is located next to the Visitor Centre. The Visitor Centre has exhibitions and interactive features on the wildlife and history of the Park and neighbouring Swanholme Lakes Local Nature Reserve. Together with Swanholme Lakes it provides a home to a wide range of plants; reptiles: amphibians and over 100 species of bird . There are also many types of mammals and butterflies and over 450 fungi. The Lake was excavated in 1848 by Lincoln Waterworks Company, to supply drinking water to Lincoln until an outbreak of typhoid in 1904. In 1862, Joseph Shuttleworth purchased the land and built Hartsholme Hall. The Hall had 19 bedrooms with striking views across the Lake, and Edward Milner was commissioned to layout the gardens. During the Second World War, the Hall was an Officer’s Mess and was used for military training. Following the war the Hall fell rapidly into disrepair and by 1947 was resident to 32 families squatting in the once impressive house. The Local Council bought the Hall and Garden in 1951, however by the end of the decade the Hall was in such a state of decay that it was demolished. The range of habitats include ,grassland, woodland and open water which support many species including nationally rare and endangered ones such as: Song thrush, Bullfinch, Pipistrelle bat. The area is also home to some species which are particularly important as they are considered rare within an urban environment such as Red-eyed damselfly ,Essex Skipper and Kingfisher . #wildlife #lincoln #country #countrypark
