Malcolm Dawson, Project Manager at Pacific Steel, took this cine film of the rolling mills he commissioned before he left New Zealand in April 1970. I uploaded this cine film to help anyone doing research into steel mills in NZ. An extract from Malcolm's CV showed; Project Manager Rolling Mills 1966- 70 "Overall responsibility for procurement, installation and commissioning of a 27 stand, single strand rod mill featuring a walking beam reheating furnace mill train with triangular roll configuration and controlled cooling outlet for the finished rod. Responsibility also included the extension and modernization of the finishing end facilities of the company’s existing 12 inch bar mill and the installation of workshops, stores, rail system and the co-ordination of all development activities." Note outside the mill you will see the famous K900 steam loco. Malcolm was instrumental in persuading the company in saving the Loco from the scrap yard and even had it welding to the rails just to make sure it wasn't removed!
