PREVENTION IS SAVING – EDUCATE TO AVOID DROWNING It is a pleasure for the Brazilian Lifesaving Society - SOBRASA to be here where we celebrate prevention as the most effective tool in reducing deaths from drowning. SOBRASA is 28 years old, and throughout this journey it has been dedicated to prevention in its entirety. 1. THE FIRST ONE ACHIEVEMENT UNITING BRAZIL IN DROWNING REDUCTION has been our mission since our foundation, enabling us to bring together people and institutions that align themselves with the cause of drowning prevention in a single fight. With our motto “TO PREVENT IS TO SAVE” we remind everyone that if you are preventing you are saving and, therefore, it is this type of hero that we want as a volunteer. And as part of our motto “EDUCATE NOT TO DROWN” we point out that education is the strongest tool in preventing drowning. 2. THE SECOND ACHIEVEMENT Was in SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION ON THE EXACT KNOWLEDGE OF THE DROWNING PROBLEM SOBRASA had helped to better understand the drowning problem with the investigation and publication of more than 300 scientific articles in peer review journals, some of them being used as world protocols, and we obtain the impressive 50% reduction in deaths from drowning in the last 28 years. 3. THE THIRD ONE WAS We brought together 3,500 volunteers who designed and carried out more than 15 different drowning prevention programs covering all ages, aquatic scenarios and risky water activities using different recreational tools created such as; mascots, comic books, cartoon video, and many others. In 2022 our volunteers performed: • 5,400 face-to-face prevention actions with 10,000 hours of work • Educated presentialy more than 1 million people in drowning prevention • Produced 651 REPORTS on TVs, Radios, Newspapers and digital networks • And disseminated prevention tips to more than 100 million people through ours 220,000 followers.
