"It's all a mind game. Some of those guys, you hit them hard, and they act like they don't feel anything. Then the next trip down the court, they hit you so hard and you can't let them know it hurt. It's all a mental game. It's just who can hit who the hardest sometimes." That's the late 80's NBA in a nutshell, at least according to a young Charles Barkley. Midway through the first round of the 1988 NBA playoffs, CBS ran a segment on the league's resident tough guys, a list that included the likes of Karl Malone, Xavier McDaniel, Rick Mahorn, and Maurice Lucas. While much of the NBA's physicality has since been successfully mitigated, at the time, enforcers like Lucas didn't know any other way. "I always thought that was the American way," Lucas said. "I thought that was the way the NBA was supposed to be played." Aired May 8, 1988 Special thanks to the ineffable Hardwood and Hoops.
