Llanwrtyd Wells in Wales (population of approx 600) is the smallest town in Britain and is surrounded by the magnificent scenery of the Cambrian Mountains often said to be the Welsh Lake District. Llanwrtyd Wells makes an excellent centre for outdoor pursuits such as walking, mountain biking, pony trekking, fishing, bird watching and Chariot racing! The contest began after a pub conversation when a local beer festival was searching for fundraising ideas. The aspiring Ben-Hurs and Boudica teams took up the challenge and pedalled in specially commissioned "mountain bike chariots" in teams of three (two pedalling bikes at the front, one in an attached rubber barrel around a ¾ of a mile course. The course was around the grounds of Abernant Lake Hotel, near to Llanwrtyd railway station. The race track itself comprised a figure of eight around an obstacle course and lake, along tracks which were liberally scattered with potholes, puddles up to 10 meters long, speed bumps, and plenty of mud! Some teams demonstrated skill and courage and coordinated fully as a single unit but others didn’t. Each team raced individually against the clock in round one and then the fastest four teams took part in a grand final which was over two laps to determine this year's World Champions. In the end, the winners were a team from Bristol called “Wild Mustangs”. Their winning time was 6.35.65 with runners-ups John Lloyd coming in some 10 seconds later.
