Mercedes-Benz Invitational Classic & Vintage Display Event June 28th 2020 Red 1966 230SL Exhibited By - Gerhard Mayrhofer The completely redesigned Mercedes-Benz 230SL series succeeded the very popular 190SL, and was pretty much an instant hit. As a group, they are popularly referred to as the “Pagoda” SL’s, due to the design of their removable hardtops. The production run of the 230SL was 18,637 from 1963 to 1967. The engine was a 2.3-liter, fuel-injected, six-cylinder unit, producing 170 h.p., which was a vast improvement over its four-cylinder 190SL predecessor. And it was surprisingly roomy for both driver & passenger. One could order a full leather interior, or the nearly indestructible M-B Tex upholstery. As with most Mercedes-Benzes of the era, it also featured wood veneer at the base of the windshield. These cars are still readily available, and due to their increasing value, refurbishment or even restoration may be a worthy investment, depending on the level of work needed. Their design, surprising roominess, and pure, flat-out fun factor keep them very high on driving wish lists.
