In a significant move ahead of the festive season, the Supreme Court of India has relaxed the absolute ban on firecrackers in the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR), allowing the sale and use of government-approved green crackers on a "test case basis." This temporary relaxation modifies previous orders that had imposed a complete ban on firecrackers to reduce air pollution, particularly during Diwali. The court's decision comes after both the Union government and Delhi government supported conditional relaxation, and it aims to strike a balance between environmental concerns, public health, and the livelihood of the firecracker industry. The new guidelines include strict regulations on the sale of green crackers, limiting their sale to designated locations and restricting their use to two days—Diwali and the day before, with specific hours for bursting.
