This is a legacy episode of Southern & Jewish, a video podcast from the Institute of Southern Jewish Life. Subscribe on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify, and watch all of our past episodes at https://www.isjl.org/podcast.html. ------------------------- It's Girl Scout Cookie season! From the beginning, the Girl Scouts have broken conventions and set a radical, progressive precedent. The original Girl Scout troops were ethnically, culturally, and racially diverse—three of the first four Girl Scout troop leaders were Jewish. This episode features stories from the early days of Girl Scouts in Savannah, Georgia, as well as the voices of southern Jewish women who have been involved in Girl Scouting over the past half-century. Tune in for tales of the first Girl Scout Cookies—produced at Gottlieb's, a kosher bakery in Savannah—and reflections on the ongoing evolution of southern Jewish womanhood. This episode was produced and hosted by 2022 ISJL Public History Intern Isabel Bartosh. Get the original Girl Scout cookie recipe: https://www.scribd.com/document/62735....
