The Mittenwaldbahn Railway, popularly known as the Karwendelbahn Railway, is a railway line in the Alps in Austria and Germany. It connects Innsbruck via Seefeld (both in Tyrol, Austria) and Mittenwald to Garmisch-Partenkirchen (both in Bavaria, Germany). The Mittenwald railway was built as an electric local railway from 1910 to 1912 by the engineers and contractors Josef Riehl and Wilhelm Carl von Doderer. The route was opened on 28 October 1912 and operated jointly by the Austrian Federal Railways and the Royal Bavarian State Railways. It was one of the first lines operated with high-tension single-phase AC-powered trains. Thus it had a substantial impact on the development of standards for electric railway operations in Central Europe. Together with the Ausserfern Railway (Ausserfernbahn) it connects the Austrian district of Außerfern (located west of the Fern Pass) with the Tyrol through Germany. Also known as the Karwendelbahn, the Mittenwaldbahn traverses the Alps between Bavaria, Germany, and Tyrol, Austria. Talks of a mountain railway went back as far as the 1880s, although no trains would turn a wheel over the pass until 1912. The line was planned to be electrified from the start, to make tackling the route much easier. The Baureihe 111 is a class of electric locomotives built for the Deutsche Bundesbahn, and now owned by Deutsche Bahn AG. Class 111 is the successor of the Class 110 express Einheitslokomotive. Since demand for fast electric locomotives was high even after production of the 110 ended, the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) decided to commission a new batch in the 1970s. The DRG Class E94 is an electric heavy freight locomotive built for Deutsche Reichsbahn from 1940, with the bulk of deliveries taking place in that year. It was a major evolution of the DRG Class E 93. Railway aficionados still call the type "Grünes Krokodil" (Green Crocodile) because of the resemblance to the Swiss locomotive nicknamed "Crocodile". 146 units were built until the end of the Second World War, as it was considered important for the war effort. They were classified as KEL 2 during that time period. After World War II, a further 49 units were ordered by the Deutsche Bundesbahn and delivered as late as 1957. The final 23 units had their power rating increased to 4,680 kW (6,280 hp). From 1968, the top speed of these locomotives was raised to 100 km/h (62 mph), and were reclassified as E 94.2, later Class 194.5, due to several technical differences. After the war, 44 units were placed under the authority of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB). In 1952, the ÖBB ordered three complementary locos. In 1954, they were classified as class 1020. Deutsche Reichsbahn refurbished 23 of the E 94 locomotives they retrieved from the Soviet occupation zone, and were put to work on heavy freight trains and occasionally express trains. Ride along the Innsbruck - Garmisch-Partenkirchenline and learn what is available to be discovered, also learn to operate the ÖBB 1020 ‘Krokodil’ and DBB BR 111.
