"Merry Go Round" , a dance from the Bidford on Avon Tradition. From Shakespeare Morris web page Shakespeare Morris was founded in 1959 and is "The Keeper of the Bidford-on-Avon Tradition." Shakespeare Morris has a special connection with the nearby village of Bidford-on-Avon, whose morris tradition has been extensively researched since 1965 by Phillip Taylor, SM's long suffering musician for many years, assisted by Tony Parsons, the great grandson of Edwin Salisbury, a foreman of the 1886 Shakespearean Bidford Morris Dancers. We also dance a variety of Cotswold Morris traditions collected from other local villages such as Adderbury, Bampton, Bucknell, Lichfield and Stanton Harcourt. Local Roots Shakespeare Morris has the privilege of wearing the family Coat of Arms of the house of John Shakespeare, William Shakespeare's father, by kind permission of the Shakespeare Trust. The gold & black shield familiar to visitors to Stratford which shows a 'shake spear' or in historic terms, a left leaning spear. Shakespeare's Birthday celebrations in Stratford continue to be a key date in our calendar, as do the opening of Stratford's Mop Fair, Bidford-on-Avon's Christmas Light's Turn-on, our May Day Celebrations and the fabulous Bromyard Folk Festival. We practise in Stratford (Clifford Chambers Village Hall) on Mondays 8-10pm (see 'Practice') during the Autumn/Winter months as well as performing our Christmas Mummers' plays (see 'Mumming'). During the Summer months we dance out in local towns and villages usually with other local morris teams. We also make regular appearances on the Bancroft Gardens in Stratford where we enjoy introducing visitors to English Traditions. Vale of Evesham National Morris Weekend A weekend of colour, music and movement – a festival celebrating the best of all of the many forms of England’s national dance In 2006 a group of friends who all danced with various Morris sides got together to develop the Morris presence at Evesham’s annual Asparagus festival. This developed very rapidly into a multi side National festival of Morris held in the Riverside Market Town of Evesham- the gateway to the Cotswolds. Here your side can take part in tours, including Pershore and the Vale villages, the Cotswolds, our own National Trust gem The Fleece Inn, and massed dancing at key venues in and around the Historic market town of Evesham.
