In his early years, Guan Yu, dissatisfied with the oppression by local tyrants, killed a man in anger and fled to Youzhou Zhuojun. There, he met Liu Bei and Zhang Fei, and they swore brotherhood, vowing to 'serve the country above and bring peace to the people below,' a pledge known as the 'Three Sworn Brothers of the Peach Garden.' During his military career in the Three Kingdoms period, Guan Yu achieved numerous remarkable feats. He once went to a meeting armed with only a single sword and slew the enemy general Yan Liang, lifting the siege of Baima. Later, while in Jingzhou, he flooded seven enemy camps with water, capturing the great general Pang De of Cao Cao's forces, and his prowess shook the entire land of China. His bravery and wisdom made him one of the most outstanding generals of the Three Kingdoms period. Guan Yu was fiercely loyal to Liu Bei, even after being captured by Cao Cao, he never betrayed his oath and ultimately chose to return to Liu Bei. Taoism believes that those seeking immortality must base their lives on loyalty, filial piety, harmony, righteousness, and trustworthiness. Guan Yu lived his life embodying loyalty, righteousness, benevolence, and bravery. His moral spirit, marked by his towering sense of justice and awe-inspiring divine might, enriched the image of Taoism. Therefore, he was honored as one of the Four Guardians of the Taoist Faith, the 'Martial Saint,' ranking alongside Confucius, the 'Scholarly Saint.' From the Ming Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, Guan Yu's titles were continually upgraded, from 'marquis' to 'saint', and he was eventually given the honorific title of 'Guan Sheng Di Jun'. The business prowess of Guan Yu is also praised by later generations. In his lifetime, he excelled in financial management and was adept at arithmetic and bookkeeping. He invented a bookkeeping method called 'Riqing Book,' which had a profound impact on later business activities. Therefore, Guan Yu is not only regarded as a deity who protects health, safety, and wards off diseases and disasters but is also honored as the protector of commerce and the martial deity of wealth who brings prosperity and abundance.
