In a shocking late-night incident in Gangavathi, Koppal district, BJP youth leader Venkatesh Kurubar was brutally murdered by a gang of assailants. Around 2 AM, near Leelavathi Hospital on Raichur Road, unidentified men rammed his bike with a car, knocked him down, and attacked him repeatedly with machetes before fleeing the spot. Police investigations have revealed that four young men, all under 25 years old, surrendered at the Kampi Police Station in Ballari district after committing the murder. Prime suspects Ravi and Karthik, along with other associates, are absconding. Interrogation of the arrested youths is expected to reveal more names behind the conspiracy. The motive appears to be old enmity linked to the local Espit (gambling) mafia. In 2023, an attempt-to-murder case involving Venkatesh’s close friend Maruthi had created a rift between two rival gangs — one led by Ravi, who was once a disciple of Venkatesh. When Venkatesh supported Maruthi and helped police arrest Ravi’s associates, animosity grew. After years of grudge, Ravi’s gang allegedly planned and executed Venkatesh’s murder. Venkatesh, who once worked as a cameraman and reporter for a local channel (JNN), had later entered the Espit mafia network while maintaining political ties. The same world of gambling and rivalry that brought him fame ultimately led to his tragic death. Reports indicate Gangavathi has become a hub for gambling operations, with over 50 groups running Espit clubs.
