Backpacking the West Rim Trail | 3 Days, 30 Miles Through the Heart of the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon @Hiking.Inspired and I set out to tackle one of Pennsylvania’s premier backpacking routes, the West Rim Trail…covering 30 miles over three days in early spring. Starting from the southern terminus near Blackwell, we hiked south to north, finishing at one of the state’s most scenic overlooks: Barbour Rock. The West Rim Trail (WRT) traces the western edge of Pine Creek Gorge, better known as the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. This 30.5-mile route cuts through Tioga State Forest, winding through mixed hardwoods, hemlock groves, and pine ridges, with some of the best rim views in the Commonwealth. The trail may not be the steepest in the state, but it’s a roller coaster of ups and downs, with rugged terrain that keeps you honest the entire way. Over three days we faced it all, unpredictable spring weather, cold mornings, slick rock, and steady elevation changes. But with every climb came another incredible overlook into the gorge below, views that make every muddy step worth it. Campsites were tucked beneath towering pines and along rushing side streams, creating that perfect early-season backcountry feel. Ending the journey at Barbour Rock was the ultimate payoff…one of Pennsylvania’s most iconic overlooks, offering sweeping views into the Pine Creek Gorge and a fitting finale to 30 miles of Appalachian wilderness. If you’re planning your own WRT thru-hike, it’s typically done in 2–3 days with shuttle options like Pine Creek Outfitters helping you manage the point-to-point logistics. Expect around 5,400–5,600 feet of total gain, rolling ridge walks, and constant reminders of why this trail is considered one of Pennsylvania’s best.
