These are big topics which I want to approach with sensitivity and also recognise my own privilege. I talk about my current experience dealing with people who I consider to be racist, homophobic, transphobic, misogynistic etc in the workplace. I speak about Otherness, being different, marginalised, outside of ‘the norm’ etc, we might be Othered and also Other ourselves for protection for example. As a straight, white, middle class man in the majority I don’t consider myself to experience being ‘othered’ in the traditional sense based on my demographic. This is why I think conversations with people who are a similar demographic are so important, encouraging them to be open and try and understand what it might be like to be a minority, especially through conversations with minorities. I appreciate that I can never understand what it means to be a minority and to experience racism for example in this way. I want to recognise my position of privilege speaking about these topics. My intention is not at all to be the ‘white saviour’, it is to be a person who is curious and open to hearing each person’s experience of feeling ‘othered’ and being on the receiving end of racism, homophobia etc. We are all ‘Other’ to one another, I want this video to also get us to think about how we experience difference on all scales, not just our demographic but also our values etc and how we co-exist with people who don't share our values. Finally, I want to encourage an openness around what it means to be in the majority and minority on an individual level, putting aside our assumptions and tendency to readily put people in a box as early as our first encounter. I think it's crucial to recognise difference but challenge our assumptions of what it might mean for the individual, staying with their lived experience. Why do others hold views and values which strongly oppose our own? I know this has been a really long description but I wanted to share my thoughts, they are not the only way of thinking, they are my opinion and experience, which might be vastly different to yours. Thank you, bub :)
