What You Need to Know About Silicone Gel Implants

Dr. Beran describes what you need to know about silicone gel implants. Transcript: There are two common types of implants we use: saline implants and silicon. Today I'd like to talk about silicone implants. Silicone implants have a rubberized silicone gel on the outside and they're filled with gummy bear cohesive type gel on the inside. The silicone implants have been used without restriction since 2006 in the U.S. They've been used throughout the world for a long much longer period of time and we had some old silicone style implants that had more of a oil rather than the current gel implants. This current generation of implants is safe and can be used effectively to enhance breast size and shape. Most of the time we're putting these implants in through a small incision roughly a little bit bigger than an inch underneath the breast. The implant almost always goes under the muscle and the implants used to enhance the shape of the breast and get us to a size we're looking for. Some would want a modest increase in size half a cup, a cup, and some of them want something much larger. In most women we have that discussion trying to determine what size you're looking for. Some women their viewpoint and my viewpoint aren't always the same as to what the optimal result is. In that case we don't always proceed with surgery but if we can reach a happy point where we're both satisfied with what we think will be the optimal size for you then surgery can be a great option for those women who feel like they need a little bit more something in their chests.
