Columns is a classic falling-block puzzle game by Sega (originally created by Jay Geertsen) where players match three or more same-colored jewels (or other symbols) horizontally, vertically, or diagonally to clear them, similar to Tetris, but with a focus on cycling symbols within 3-jewel columns. Released in 1990, it features a classical theme, fast-paced gameplay as speed increases, and chain reactions, with versions for various Sega consoles and later ports to other systems. Key Gameplay Mechanics: Falling Columns: Sets of three jewels fall from the top, landing in a well. Symbol Cycling: While falling, you can cycle the order of the three jewels within the column. Matching: Align three or more matching jewels (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) to make them disappear. Gravity & Chaining: Cleared jewels cause upper jewels to fall, potentially creating chain reactions and higher scores. Magic Jewels: In many versions, clearing multiple combos can create a special "Magic Jewel" that clears all jewels of its color. Goal: Survive as long as possible as the fall speed increases, preventing the pile from reaching the top. Features & Versions: Theme: Classical, with jewel-themed blocks. Player Modes: Single-player and two-player options available. Platforms: Originated on Unix, ported to Arcade, Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, Game Gear, Master System, and later systems like Nintendo Switch Online. Variants: Includes sequels and ports like Columns GB (with Tezuka Osamu characters) and Columns '97.
