WATCH: Bystanders Save Female Police Officer Attacked by Suspect

Surveillance footage uploaded by San Francisco Police Officers Association showed a female police officer being assaulted by a man while attempting to confront him, on Friday (May 28). Local media NBC reported that the tussle happened in the evening slightly before 7pm at an intersection near Portsmouth Square. Another media outlet CNN had also reported that police had confirmed the officer to be of Asian descent, and the suspect to be a 33-year-old by the name of Gerardo Contreras. Police officials had posted that they've seen a "rise in violent attacks by homeless individuals, including attacks on police officers." The post had also mentioned that a staffing shortage had led to the officer working alone, instead of with a partner.
