Free From Epic Games January 9th to January 16th 2025 Title: Turmoil (2015) Summary: Drill for oil like it's 1899! Turmoil offers players a visually charming, tongue-in-cheek take on the simulation genre inspired by the 19th century oil rush in North America. Release Date: Unknown Developer: Gamious Publisher: Gamious Platforms: iOS, Switch, PC Genres: Tycoon -------------------------------------- Turmoil is a strategy tycoon game set during the 19th-century oil rush in North America. Your ultimate goal is to amass enough wealth to buy a controlling share of the town and become its mayor, through mining the oil in a series of fields under time limits The gameplay loop is VERY straightforward. Each round begins with competitive bidding for a land plot, based on the oil yields of nerby fields. Once you claim your stake, the objective is then to extract as much profit from it over 1 in game year. To find the oil in your field, you can use moles or scanners to check spots, as in Battleship, or hire dowsers to locate the horizontal position of deposits. You then build an oil rigs and efficiently lay non-overlapping pipes to connect the rigs to the well. The extracted oil can then be sort at highly volatile prices to one of two companies, or stored in the hope the price offered by one of the companies heavily increases. Gas deposits can be connected to special connections to tempererily increase oil value. The strategy then becomes deciding how much of the money made needs to be reinvested in infrastructure and upgrades, or searching for other potential untapped deposits. The campaign takes about 8 hours, and pits you against 3 other AI oil tycoons. Between levels, the townspeople offer various upgrades or bribes to make the game a bit easier, but which gives you less profit to spend in the auctions. Clearing the campaign unlocks an expert mode, where each of the 4 tycoons has a special ability. The game is fun for short bursts, but the core loop of extracting and selling doesn’t evolve significantly, and the mechanics remain straightforward throughout. Also, once you have a solid strategy, every level is approached similarly, and even when you have ammased a small fortune, you can only start each field with the same small amount of money, as a way to artificially balance the game. Luck also plays a role, as AI bidding can be unpredictable, and you can get unlucky with empty fields, or just not finding resources. The competitive element of the campaign and multiplayed also feels quite artificial, as you only interact with others during land and share auctions. Overall, Turmoil is a charming and accessible casual management game. Its lack of depth makes it easy to pick up, but also what limits its replayability.
