Leaving Gateway, the road enters the heart of Unaweep Canyon, where steep rock walls and quiet curves define the drive. Traffic is sparse, and the landscape quickly takes over—sandstone, granite, and long stretches of stillness shaping the miles ahead. Midway through the drive, we pass the Diggs Mansion ruins, the remnants of an early 20th-century homestead that now stands quietly beside the road. It’s a subtle landmark, easy to miss, and a reminder of how briefly people tend to occupy places like this. Although not visible along the road, Unaweep Canyon is unique in the world: streams near its center drain in opposite directions, flowing toward different river systems. As the canyon gradually opens, the road remains steady and unhurried, carrying us toward the Gunnison River near the end of the drive. There is no dramatic change in terrain—only a subtle return of fences, buildings, and other signs of civilization as the journey comes to a quiet close near Whitewater.
