ASDA Small Heath has donated £500, which will be used to help us to continue running our Life Skills Group, to support deaf adults with additional learning disabilities. Community fundraising and grants from Trusts enabled us to establish the Life Skills Group, which was set up in 2016 with the aim of supporting Deaf adults with additional learning disabilities or difficulties. Donations, like ASDA's, have helped us to keep the group running over the last year and as a result, we've been able to support a number of Deaf adults. It is estimated that 1 in 3 people with a learning disability also have a degree of hearing loss, with some research quoting that 40% of adults with learning disabilities have a moderate to severe hearing loss. For those with a severe loss and especially those individuals that communicate through British Sign Language, it can be difficult to access groups and activities that are organised for people with learning disabilities due to their specific access and communication requirements. This can often lead to greater feelings of frustration and isolation as they are unable to participate in supportive peer groups and opportunities to learn skills to maximise their independence. We have looked at redressing this by setting up the Life Skills Group, a specialist weekly group which is attended by over 20 deaf people with learning disabilities to provide an accessible and supportive environment for them to develop essential life skills. The group meets every Friday at the Deaf Cultural Centre where they have taken part in learning about personal hygiene including the application of makeup, food hygiene and preparation, healthy eating experimenting with fruits and vegetables, baking and cleanliness in the kitchen. Following the topic of healthy eating, the group were invited to a tour of ASDA in Small Heath. The tour encompassed parts of the store not normally permissible to members of the public which included a visit to the huge fridge and freezer rooms and the warehouse areas. The group learned about the different food groups and why certain foods has to be stored in a cold temperature. At the end of the tour, each individual had a go on the check-out. The purpose of this was to build their confidence and to permit them to have a go at something they had never tried before. We are thankful to all of ASDA's customers who chose our charity using their green tokens and especially Tracey Collins, ASDA's Community Champion for ASDA Small Heath who helped with some of the group sessions and made the tour possible. The Life Skills Group is dependent on donations.
