We will finally get to the Karlín in today's 4K Prague Czech Republic walk. Karlin is the Prague district that has been developing strongly in recent years. Let's take a walk first in its old part, go into the Cyril and Methodius Church and walk through the streets. Karlín is a cadastral area of Prague, part of Prague's 8 municipal district, formerly an independent town (which became part of Prague in 1922). It is bordered by the river Vltava and Holešovice to the north, Vítkov hill and Žižkov to the south, New Town to the west, and Libeň to the east. The building of the Karlín district began in 1817, surrounding the Rosarium of the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star. The new settlement was named after the fourth wife of Emperor Francis I of Austria, Caroline Augusta of Bavaria. After the demolition of the city walls, the properties in Karlín were counted among the cheapest properties in Prague. For that reason, the number of industrial enterprises and dwellings proliferated in the area of "Rohan Island" (Rohanský Ostrov). On January 1, 1922, Karlín was incorporated into Prague. At this time, the electrical engineering pioneer and industrialist František Křižík had significant influence in the area. He established a streetcar line, which he then sold to the city. In the 1970s, traffic was rerouted onto the Rohanské nábřeží, and the main arterial road was relieved. Since 1990 Karlín has been connected to the Prague Metro, and a pedestrian zone has been established. In 2002 Karlín was severely affected by the 100-year flood. It has since recovered and is becoming a new destination for businesses and residences. Cyril and Methodius Church (Kostel svatého Cyrila a Metoděje) is a Roman Catholic church in the Karlín district of Prague, Czech Republic. It belongs to the most significant religious buildings in the Czech Republic. It was constructed in the mid-19th century, and it remains one of the most important architectural landmarks from the period of historicism in the country. The church was built in 1854–1863 to plans by architects Carl Roesner and Vojtěch Ignác Ullmann. Several Czech and Austrian artists contributed to the decoration of the church, led by František Sequences and Josef Mathias Trenkwald. The Church was consecrated on 18 October 1863, on the millennium anniversary of the arrival of Saints Cyril and Methodius to the Bohemian lands. The church was constructed in the late Neo-Romanesque style as a basilica with a highly elevated central nave and two towers. The ground plan contains an entrance hall, three naves, and a presbytery with a semicircular apse between two chapels under the towers. The last decoration of the baptismal chapel was finished in 1905 in an art nouveau style. https://goo.gl/maps/9NKed9MC5gANfLaF7 The Carved statues of Saint Cyril and Methodius (1937) were made by Czech sculptor Bretislav Kafka.
