Summary of 2 Kings Chapter 4 This chapter highlights Elisha's ministry through a series of miracles that demonstrate God's compassion and power, often in response to faith and hospitality. The Widow’s Oil (verses 1-7): A desperate widow of one of Elisha's fellow prophets cries out to him because creditors are about to take her two sons as slaves. Elisha tells her to gather as many empty jars as she can from her neighbors, shut herself in her house with her sons, and pour her only jar of olive oil into them. Miraculously, the oil multiplies, filling every jar. She sells the oil to pay her debts and live on the rest. The Shunammite Woman’s Son (verses 8-37): A wealthy, childless woman from Shunem and her husband show Elisha great hospitality by building a room for him. In gratitude, Elisha prophesies that she will have a son the following year, which comes true. Years later, the boy dies suddenly of a head ailment. The woman lays the boy on Elisha's bed and urgently seeks the prophet. Elisha returns with her, prays to God, and stretches himself over the boy twice, restoring him to life. The Poisoned Stew (verses 38-41): During a famine, Elisha instructs his servant to make stew for the company of prophets. One servant mistakenly gathers wild gourds (poisonous) and puts them in the pot. Upon discovering the deadly stew, Elisha throws flour into the pot and miraculously purifies it, making it safe to eat. Feeding a Hundred People (verses 42-44): A man brings Elisha a firstfruits offering of twenty barley loaves and fresh grain. Elisha tells him to give it to the hundred men gathered there. Though the servant doubts it will be enough, Elisha insists, stating God's promise: "They shall eat and have some left." The food miraculously multiplies, satisfying everyone with leftovers, prefiguring the later miracles of Jesus. Overall Theme: The chapter emphasizes God's provision, compassion for the vulnerable (the poor, the barren, the hungry), and the authority of His prophet, Elisha, through whom divine power flows to meet human need. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Book of 2 KINGS is available in audio format from the King James Version of the Holy Bible.
