The United Nations Security Council has approved a US-backed resolution, endorsing Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara. The former Spanish colony was annexed by Morocco in 1975 and has since then been the subject of a long-running territorial dispute between Morocco and the Algeria-backed Polisario Front. The resolution calls for the parties to engage in negotiations, arguably bringing Morocco-Algeria relations a step closer to normalisation. Yet, with Algeria refusing to sign on and the Polisario Front continuing to push for independence, could the conflict be resolved? And with the US growing vocal about finalising a peace deal between the two soon, can Washington prove the power broker that brings peace?
