I have a couple of tomato plants to plant today, so I thought I'd show you how I do it. When you plant tomato plants, you want to bury them deep, with most of the stem below the surface of the soil. This will create a strong root system and healthier plants. Remove the lower leaves and any suckers from the plant. Dig a deep hole that's wider than the root ball. Place the plant in the hole, and fill it in with loose dirt. Pack the dirt around it, making sure there aren't any air pockets. Water the plant really well. I'm going to add some Miracle Grow fertilizer too. These tomato plants are WAY OVERDUE for planting. I planted these from seed. They are seriously root bound and should have been transplanted a month ago. If they do anything, they will be really late in the season. I've spent the past two days pulling and hoeing weeds. It has taken me 5 hours so far, but I'm making great progress! I hate weeds, and I can't stand to see them in my garden. I moved all of my watermelon and cantaloupe vines and got the weeds from under them. That is mostly work that has to be done on my hands and knees, so my back is killing me. I have a great crop of cantaloupe coming along. They are just starting to form veins on the rinds. My sugar baby watermelons look awesome too, but there aren't as many of them. I planted some bush sugar babies a little later than the others, and they are just starting to form fruit. I picked a handful of hot peppers today, and I have a few cucumbers ready too.
