Using Systematic Social Observations on Google Street View to Assess Neighborhood Characteristics in Minneapolis Michelle Pasco, Family Social Science, University of Minnesota Methods for studying neighborhood characteristics are often limited to self-report and archival assessments, with less attention to observational approaches. Available observational protocols tend to focus on inhibiting characteristics (e.g., physical decay/disorder) in the neighborhood. In this presentation, I will illustrate how I adapted an existing systematic social observations (SSO) protocol to be contextually and culturally informed for neighborhoods in Minneapolis. Specifically, I will show how I use SSO on Google Street View to assess important neighborhood characteristics, including the presence of physical disorder, physical decay, street safety, and sociocultural symbols across different neighborhoods. The use of SSO on Google Street View gives researchers insights into what residents are exposed to in their neighborhoods. Whether it be walking or driving to school, going to the grocery store, or traveling across town, individuals come across different exposures that have implications for health and well being.
