USA: AID AGREEMENT TO THE UKRAINE SIGNED

(22 Nov 1994) Eng/Nat US President Bill Clinton has agreed to provide Ukraine with millions of dollars of aid to help dismantle its huge nuclear arsenal. He's been meeting with Ukraine President Leonid Kuchma in Washington where they have signed a number of historic agreements for future cooperation. It was a meeting with immediate consequences for the former Soviet republic. Clinton was greeting Kuchma with a promise of two hundred (m) million dollars in new US aid. The presidents signed an agreement for future cooperation in space. But the most significant part of the talks focused on dismantling Ukraine's nuclear arsenal, the third largest in the world. SOUNDBITE: "Ukraine's move is a major step towards ensuring that nuclear missiles never again will be targeted at the children of our nations. I told President Kuchma that the United States will continue to work with Ukraine to dismantle completely its nuclear arsenal."
