In the ongoing debate about who truly controls Zimbabwe's political landscape, former cabinet minister and Zanu PF politburo member Professor Jonathan Moyo has made a clear statement: politics must lead the military, not the opposite way around. Professor Moyo strongly believes that letting the military control politics goes against what Zimbabwe's freedom fighters fought for. He points out that during the country's struggle for freedom, it was political leadership that guided military action, following what was known as "nzira dzemasoja" - the guiding principles for freedom fighters. "In Zimbabwe's national liberation struggle, politics commanded the gun - not the other way around," Moyo writes. This view comes at a time when many people question the relationship between Zimbabwe's military and the ruling Zanu PF party, especially after the 2017 removal of Robert Mugabe that brought President Emmerson Mnangagwa to power. The military's role in that change of leadership has raised questions about who really runs the country. But Professor Moyo insists that military control of politics should never be accepted as normal.
