The double assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife, Countess Sophie Chotek, in Sarajevo on 28 June 1914 was the spark that caused World War 1 to break out just a month later. In this World War 1 documentary from History Calling we look at that fateful day, over a century ago when the entire path of history was changed by the actions of a nineteen year old terrorist called Gavrilo Princip and his associates. While conflict may have begun at some point anyway, the death of Franz Ferdinand and his morganatic wife was the immediate cause of the Great War which would rage for four years and cost the lives of tens of millions of people.
