The double assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife, Countess Sophie Chotek, in Sarajevo on 28 June 1914 was the spark that caused World War 1 to break out just a month later. In this World War 1 documentary from History Calling we look at that fateful day, over a century ago when the entire path of history was changed by the actions of a nineteen year old terrorist called Gavrilo Princip and his associates. While conflict may have begun at some point anyway, the death of Franz Ferdinand and his morganatic wife was the immediate cause of the Great War which would rage for four years and cost the lives of tens of millions of people. This video will look at the forbidden romance between Franz Ferdinand and Sophie, at why she was not his Archduchess, at why they were in Sarajevo that day, at why Franz Ferdinand was murdered, at how Franz Ferdinand was murdered (including how he and Sophie survived one attempt on their lives earlier in the day, only to be shot later on) and at why the assassination of the heir to Austro-Hungarian throne had such wide-ranging consequences.
