Our third stop in Greece has been the island of Syros! Syros is the administrative capital of the Cyclades and is rich in culture & history. Walking down some of the streets in Ermoupolis had felt like a like a fusion of Italy and Greece with some of the most beautiful old buildings we've seen. Ermoupolis or "Hermoupolis" means 'City of Hermes' and if you didn't know, Hermes was the God of Commerce according to Wikipedia. It has always been a significant port town, and during the 19th century it was even more significant than Piraeus, the main port in Athens. A notable resident of the island has been Stamata Revithi, who was the first woman to compete in the Olympic Games and run the Marathon! How fascinating is that! We loved Syros and there was lots to see and do including the beautiful Apollo Theatre, the medieval town of Ana Syros and of course Agios Nikolaos Church. There is even a casino there!
