Technique: Airbrush and Coloured Pencil I am available for portrait commissions please visit my website https://www.tonywoodcockfineart.co.uk   / tony.fineart   This time-lapse speed drawing of Scarlett Johansson demonstrates the technique I used to create a kind of vintage photographic look to it. I first sketched the outline of Scarlett Johansson's face, hair and arms. I then used the coloured pencil to very lightly block in the dark areas while leaving the lighter areas alone. This gave me an exact map of where I need to airbrush the dark areas, this can be seen at the beginning of the video. Once I have mapped out the dark areas with the coloured pencil I then use my airbrush to go over the areas. The airbrush allows for a fine gradient from light to dark. The reason I use a combination of airbrush and pencil is because when the two are combined it creates some nice depth and richness to the colours. What happens is two or three different colours are layered on top of each other. It acts almost like a glaze in painting, light travels through the layers of coloured pencil and is reflected back off the airbrushed layer below. And so after I have finished the undertone with the airbrush I then go over it again with coloured pencil, this is where you start to notice this depth and richness appear in the colour of the drawing.
