Here's what you need to know about the mechanics throughout this run: You have a shield mechanic that grants you a free hit and gets rid of all the bullets on screen. The number at the bottom left (starting at +400) indicates how fast your shield recharges. It caps out at +2000. To increase this number, you collect power items (red P's) while you're at full power (4.00). When you get hit without a shield and still have bombs in stock, you will autobomb and use up ALL of the bombs in your stock, no matter how many there are. Therefore, the best way to draw out each life is to manually bomb if you don't have a shield but still have more than one bomb in your stock. If you only have one bomb in stock, you can allow yourself the hit since there is no extra penalty. The true last boss in the game (Suwako's grayscale shadow counterpart) is unlocked by defeating the book midboss in stage 3.
