In 1976 the death of a twenty-three year old woman left the town of Klingenberg in Bavaria, West Germany, shaken. For years, the residents that lived there refused to even speak the young womans name: Anneliese Michel. You see, for the last few years of Anneliese Michel's life, she believed she had been overtaken by demonic forces that refused to let her go. Being devoutly Catholic, Anneliese Michel turned to her religion and her church for help. For nearly a year preceding her death, 2 priests named Father Ernst Alt and Father Arnold Renz attempted to drive away the demons that Annaliese, her parents and the priests were convinced possessed her. In secret, they carried out 67 rites of exorcism over a period of 10 months, with some sessions lasting up to four hours. When Anneliese Michel died on July 1, 1976, she weighed a mere 68 pounds. And the autopsy report said that her death was caused by malnutrition and dehydration that resulted from nearly a year of semi-starvation during her weekly exorcisms. Experts said Anneliese Michel's death could have been prevented, but her family argued that doctors and medical intervention weren’t helping.
