Understanding when to apply power is crucial to develop better swim speed. Power during the catch is not recommended unless you are a youthful, strong competitive sprinter with proper coach guidance. So what about all us adult onset swimmers, masters swimmers and triathletes? Applying power too early in the underwater pull can result in 2 main problems and a potential world of hurt: A powerful catch will lift you up, and NOT send you forward. A powerful catch puts a lot more stress on your shoulders, increasing the chance of injury. The catch should be viewed as a 'gathering' phase only. Once you have gathered the water, then you can apply more power, and this is what Diamond Drill is for.
