(7 Jan 1995) English/Nat Civil rights leader Jesse Jackson called Saturday for a new grassroots movement against the Republicans and their so-called Contract with America. With defiant Republicans now in control of the U-S Congress - Democrats and liberal forces are looking to counter the conservative tide. Jesse Jackson is hoping to rally the scattered forces of the Democratic party and its liberal allies. His conference this week is an effort to organize grassroots liberal groups - including Jackson's own Rainbow Coalition - around a common enemy. Their first order of business is to repudiate the new Republican policy platform - known as the Contract with America. SOUNDBITE: "We've analysed the Republican contract. At its core it is a statement to Americans that in the new global economy the people are on their own." SUPER CAPTION: Jesse Jackson, President-Rainbow Coalition. SOUNDBITE: "At a time when the economy is growing, but wages are declining, and poverty and hunger is spreading, radical conservatives say government can do little....but give more tax breaks to corporations and the wealthiest Americans. This is not acceptable and will be resisted." (Jackson) They will resist with a familiar combination of minorities, liberal- leaning advocacy groups, and white Americans - the force that has until now carried the Democratic party. They're fighting this man - Newt Gingrich - leader of the firebrand Republican right in Congress - the new speaker of the House - and the man many say is the most powerful politician in Washington. Gingrich is joined by a new army of fresh Republican faces in Congress. Jackson and his grassroots allies will challenge the conservative wave at the ballot box. SOUNDBITE: "Republicans won this time with fewer votes than they lost by the last time around...because voter registration was virtually nil and voter turnout was very low. And so, those seats can go to people who embrace the covenant of inclusion as opposed to the contract of exclusion." (Jackson). It will be a tough battle to win back the Republican Congress. Jackson and his coalition have less than two years before the next test during national elections in November 1996.
