Olga Bertolo is a graduate student at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. Her studies in international trade have sparked a strong interest in China’s consumer market and Shanghai’s ever-emerging new consumption trends. She explored different new consumer formats in Shanghai, seeking to uncover the secrets behind the city’s vibrant consumption. Olga visited a trendy shop offering customized “pockets” to see how co-creation experiences can revive traditions and meet personalized needs; an original store selling all kinds of cute home goods, where boundless creativity resonates with people and drives purchasing power; and a pet shop making fresh day meals and birthday cakes, where heartfelt emotional supply touches the hearts of pet lovers. After in-depth conversations with several founders, Olga identified some common traits among these new consumption models: careful segmentation and deep insights into consumer groups, an emphasis on experience and co-creation for spiritual fulfillment, alignment with—or even leadership in—values such as environmental protection and social responsibility, and creative products full of imagination and fun. Through a discussion, Olga realized that personalized and diversified demand has become a clear trend in China’s consumer market. For years, Shanghai has actively championed first-store launches, business model innovation, technology adoption, and the creation of new scenarios—fostering dynamic innovation on both the supply and demand sides, and keeping the market full of vitality and potential.
