Derelict Thorpe Marsh Power Station at Thorpe near Doncaster. 1959 was the year the station was commissioned and was built as a prototype to all large to all the large modern power stations in the UK. 1963 saw the station officially opened. It Contained 2 generating sets which were powered by coal and a gas turbine using a static version of the Rolls Royce Avon aero engine. On January 7th 1973 four workmen died, as a result the CEGB (Central Electricity Generating Board) was put under investigation of safety breaches. But all four workmen were found to have died of accidental deaths. The station closed in 1994 and the 45 acres had been asquired by Able Uk in 1995. The majority of the station was demolished, remaining are the 6 cooling towers, 2 ash slurry hoppers, railways sidings and the large electricity switching station. The only reason these still remain is because any explosion could cause the banks of the nearby canal to rupture. Also containing asbestos which could contaminate the surrounding area. Since closure there have been a few proposals for the site including a car distribution depot and a landfill site.
