Free CCNA Training Course | Part 4 - Rapid Spanning Tree Welcome to the Free CCNA Training Course. This series is for anyone who wants to build on their basic network skills, and even pass the CCNA 200-301 exam. Part 1 of this series starts with Layer-2/Switching technology. This covers topics like general switching, VLANs, Interfaces, Spanning-Tree, RSTP, Etherchannels, and Power Over Ethernet (PoE). The website has additional links for further study to take you to the next level. Links are at the end of the description. In this video, we’re going cover: 0:00 Overview 0:58 Introducing RSTP 3:07 BPDUs and the Root Bridge 5:54 RSTP Ports 10:37 Port States 15:10 Port Topologies 18:52 Per VLAN Instances Spanning-tree is a necessity, but there are downsides. One of the improved versions is RSTP (Rapid Spanning Tree protocol). It uses various enhancements to find loops, and improve convergence. Another version is MSTP (Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol), but we’re focusing on RSTP here. The core features of spanning-tree (AKA Classic Spanning-Tree, or CST) have not changed. For example, there is still a root bridge (elected by priority), and they still send BPDUs. They still have root and designated ports. One change is the blocking, listening, learning, forwarding states. These take too long, so RSTP introduces a new SYNC process, and a discarding state. There are also new port states, called backup and alternate, which help to respond to changes quickly. There is also a new port type called an ‘Edge’ port. Cisco often call this ‘Port Fast’. This is a port that’s connected to an edge device, like a workstation or printer. These devices don’t forward frames, so a loop cannot form on these ports. The BPDUGuard feature can eb enabled on these ports to give them protection. Cisco’s version of RSPT is Rapid-PVST+. This is a per-VLAN version of spanning-tree, where each VLAN can have it’s own topology. This means that we can have different root bridges per VLAN, as well as different blocking ports per VLAN.
