The sugar industry in Tanzania has seen substantial growth in recent years. With several major projects underway, the country is making strides toward self-sufficiency and even surplus in sugar production. Overall, Tanzania's sugar production has seen a significant boost, reaching 460,000 tonnes per year—up from below 300,000 tonnes just five years ago. However, with a national demand of about 800,000 tonnes, there's still work to be done. The government has set a target to increase production to 700,000 metric tonnes by the end of the 2025/26 financial year The charge are key players like the Kilombero Sugar Company, which is undergoing a 744 billion shilling expansion to double its production capacity, and other industry giants such as Bagamoyo Sugar Limited, Kagera Sugar Limited, TPC Limited, and Mtibwa Sugar Estate Limited. One of the most recent milestones in this journey is the inauguration of the Mkulazi Sugar Factory at Mbigiri Estate in Kilosa District, Morogoro Region where President Samia Suluhu Hassan officially opened this multi-billion-dollar facility, marking a new era for Tanzania's sugar industry. The factory's sugar production target is 50,000 metric tonnes annually, with a daily capacity ranging from 200 to 300 tonnes. The Mkulazi Sugar Factory is more than just a sugar producer. It aims to diversify Tanzania's industrial output by also producing bio-ethanol, particle boards, and pulp.
