Most people, if asked, would probably be able to pick out Will Shakespeare from a police identity parade. You know the receding hairline and the little beard. Now, I don’t intend to get into a debate about Shakespeare here: let’s just accept that he is the greatest playwright in the English language and move on. The fact that he only wrote 39 plays in his career and some of us turn out that many on a wet Thursday afternoon has nothing at all to do with it. Neither is it anything to do with the quality of his work but rather the phenomenon that enables those of you who are not great theatre goers to have at least a nodding acquaintance with him. We like the familiar. And if it isn’t a play or film or book by someone we know, why do we go to it hoping it might be like something we’ve already seen. Bad luck those whose name is not familiar out there.. In this, Phase 4 of our exploration into the how and why of story telling I’m asking why people prefer stories that are in a style or by somebody that’s familiar in some way.
