Spleen diseases in Children and Laparoscopic Splenectomy What is a spleen? Spleen is a small organ inside the body near the left rib cage above the stomach. The spleen is about the size of a pear. The spleen is an integral part of the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a significant part of the immune system. It performs several functions to keep the body healthy. First, it acts as a filter for blood as part of the immune system. It helps in the regulation of damaged blood cells. Third, it enlarges in conditions where blood disorders like sickle cell anemia, thalassemia and phagocytosis. Thus, the main reason for its enlargement is its excessive function. When the spleen controls the abnormality of blood function, its size enlarges and hinders its general function. Hence, this enlargement can be dangerous for the child, and its treatment is essential. Therefore, if necessary, healthcare providers remove the spleen during a splenectomy procedure. The function of the spleen in the body? • It stores blood. • It filters blood and removes cellular waste and damaged blood cells. • It makes white blood cells and antibodies to fight infection. • It helps in maintaining the levels of fluid in the body. • It produces antibodies to protect against diseases. Diagnosis of spleen disease? The procedure for its diagnosis is blood tests and ultrasound. The ultrasound shows how much the spleen has enlarged. Sometimes along with spleen enlargement, the gall bladder also forms gallstones. This is the reason ultrasound is necessary to see a clear picture of the spleen and gallbladder. Treatment of spleen disease: Its treatment is operation. Through surgery, the spleen is removed from the body. Before removing the spleen, precautionary measures are taken by the doctors. First of all, three different kinds of vaccines are injected into children. The primary purpose of these vaccinations is to protect the child from bacteria. It aids in cleaning of spleen and prepares the body to be immune against these bacteria. Doctors arrange blood before the surgery. In case of excessive bleeding, a blood transfusion is done. Operation is performed through a Laparoscopic Splenectomy procedure. In this surgery, 3 to 4 small incisions are made in the tummy. Then instruments are inserted, and the spleen is detached from its blood supply and removed from the body. Recovery is very smooth, and the child is kept in observation for only one day. Then blood tests are done if the results are fine baby is sent home. Moreover, the spleen is also sent to a laboratory for biopsy to further know about any other abnormal conditions. _________________ Follow us on Social Media Platforms FACEBOOK @AlsaPakistan / alsapak. .
