(17 Aug 2000) English/Nat XFA Israeli Interior Minister and acting Foreign Minister Shlomo Ben Ami has met U-S Mideast envoy Dennis Ross in Tel Aviv. The meeting is part of talks aimed at resuming the Middle East peace process following the failure of the Camp David summit. Meanwhile at a news conference in the West Bank city of Ramallah, the Palestinian security commander in the West Bank said Israel must choose between building more Jewish settlements or peace with the Palestinians. At last month's Camp David summit, understandings were reached on the borders of a Palestinian state and the future of Jewish settlements, but gaps still remain. The talks eventually broke down because of a dispute over Jerusalem and the fate of Palestinian refugees. Since the summit, Israel and the Palestinians have made several informal contacts. The Israelis should decide if they want more settlements, more confiscation of lands, whether they want to dictate to the Muslims and the Christians how to pray in Jerusalem. Therefore it is up to the Israelis to decide. Excuse me, but from our side the priority, and it's a matter of belief in the principle that the right way is to have a Palestinian state through agreement and talks.
